This is essentially the first work by Pushkin that I read and it was quite a ride!
First and foremost, Pushkin is a symbol, a myth, he is noted as the father of russian literature, and justly. He has multifaceted work that extends from lyrical poems to novels.
Specifically, this work, aside from the element of fantasy that spirals things out of control with the appearance of the ghost of the countess, foreshadows
Dostoyevsky's realism, as it is about a man, Hermann that becomes passionate about having lots and lots of money, instantly, by gambling. During his quest to discover the three cards that would bring him to wealth, he seduces the young ward, Lizavyeta. Finally, the ending is absolutely terrific, but not that unexpected.
All in all, a superb short story, worth reading!
